Yayasan Wadah Titian Harapan or Wadah has launched a program called Gerobak Pintar (Smart Cart) on Monday, July 1, 2013, for underprivileged communities in the urban area of Klender, East Jakarta. The launching ceremony was attended by underprivileged children and their parents, village administration officers and Wadah staff, together with activists from 6 Wadah communities. The said event was also attended by Mr. Stephen Looho from the Rotary Club of South Jakarta, one of the donors for the smart cart program.
After the launching ceremony, some of Wadah’s activists including Ibu Purwati from Klender community, Ibu Kiswanti from Warabal Parung community and Listiyaningsih from Penjaringan community, invited and encouraged the children to sing cheerful songs, listen to children’s stories and practice various cheers. All of the children and their parents were happy and showed their enthusiastic welcome for the program. The children present during the event received healthy nourishment at the end of the ceremony.
The Gerobak Pintar program, an adaptation from the Kariton Push Cart Program developed by the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) in the Phillipines, has been initiated by Ibu Anie Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Wadah’s Patron, as a medium to help improve knowledge of the children who do not go to school due to financial limitations but have a strong desire to do so. Out-of-school children and even those who have no interest to go to school are also welcome to join the program. It is expected that this Gerobak Pintar project could help develop awareness in the underprivileged communities that education is a very important aspect for the future of their children.
The Gerobak Pintar program consists of 4 categories that include: Education, Health, Extra Food Supplement and Life Skills for parents. The program will be fully operated by Wadah’s activists for three months after which it shall be handed over to the communities in the area with supervision from Wadah. (etty)
