This year’s water shortages due to long droughts or El Nino hit has affected many parts of the country. Arjasari village in South Bandung Regency was no exception. Concerned about the plight of the people living in the said community that it supports, Wadah Foun-dation invited Lt Col. Simon Kamlasi, the inventor of the hydraulic ram pump to come to Arjasari village to explore the possibility of installing a hydraulic ram pump in the community. Lt. Col. Simon is the Commander of the Detachment Equipment Korem 161 / Wira Sakti Kupang, who is an expert not only in making hydraulic water pumps, but also has extensive experience in installing hydraulic pumps in various regions of Indonesia where water is scarce. Lt. Col Simon’s arrival was received with great exuberance by the village chief (village head) and the Arjasari Village community.

The techonology behind the hydraulic ram pump was inspired the water hammer effect which helps create pressure on a portion of the input water to help lift or raise the water above its original level. These pumps are very economical as they can pump the water 24 hours a day without the need for fuel or electric power.

In just two months, three hydraulic water pumps have been installed in the village of Arjasari and they can deliver clean water directly into the people’s houses. This is the outcome of the tremendous cooperation of the villagers in Arjasari with the aid of several other parties including Wadah Found-ation.

The water source is located in a valley surrounded by gardens and fields owned by the community. According to the Arjasari village elders, the water source had been discovered since the Dutch colonial era as this region was once a tea and quinine plantation owned by the Dutch.

To preserve the sustainability and cleanliness of the spring, Mrs. Anie suggested that the fields around it need to be vegetated by growing plants and trees that can hold water including bamboo. In addition to this, the cleanliness and clarity of the main water reservoir need to be maintained for it to be safely used by the community.
